LIFE & TIMES

In 1999, Dr. Horacena Tate began her first of seven terms as the 38th District Georgia State Senator. This district is located in the western portion of Fulton County. Senator Tate serves on six (6) GA senate standing committees: Appropriations, Education & Youth, Health & Human Services, Reapportionment & Redistricting, State & Local Governmental Operations and Urban Affairs.

Horacena Tate is a lifetime Georgia resident who was born in Griffin and raised in Atlanta. She is a product of the Atlanta City School System and in 1973 graduated from Frederick Douglass High School. She matriculated to the University of Georgia and in 1977 received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Senator Tate received her Master degree in Education Administration in 1988 from Atlanta University and her Doctor of Education degree in 1992 from Clark Atlanta University.

Horacena Tate began her professional career with the Georgia Department of Labor after providing volunteer service in the Office of the Governor. For nearly two decades she worked with United Airlines and their subsidiary Apollo Travel Services. Currently, Dr. Tate serves as President of Tate, Marsh and Associate, Inc. a consulting firm that specializes in technical writing and software/management training.

Horacena Tate is actively involved with her community. She is member of Cascade United Methodist Church and their ministry, the United Methodist Women Group. Her volunteer efforts include:

• Motivational speaker at local colleges, universities, and Atlanta public schools for career days, graduations, awards programs, and upon request
• Member of the Rosalie Wright Community Council and has previously served as their Vice President
• Board member the Carrie Steele-Pitts Home, a child caring agency in the Southwest Atlanta
• Computer literacy advisor for the Butler Street YMCA
• Software instructor for numerous District 38 churches
• Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and has served as Corresponding Secretary for a local chapter

On many occasions, Senator Tate has been recognized for her service efforts:

• The Public Servant Award from Coalition on Hunger, 2001
• The Distinguished Public Servant Award from the MLK, Jr. Drive Merchant Association, 2000
• Leader of Distinction Award from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., 1999, 2000, and 2003
• Outstanding Leadership Award from the medical staff of Southwest Hospital and Medical Center, 2000
• Outstanding Achievement Award from the National Women of Achievement, 1999
• Unity Award from the Atlanta Job Corps, 2001
